This is week 18 of my 52 week project and I have challenged myself to look at depth of field. I have a few ideas for this month’s challenge and I’m hoping that some of them will be really exciting. What is depth of field, and how can we show it in photographs? In traditional terms, depth of field is the size of the plane of focus in an image. As you can see from the image above, the top and bottom of the image are out of focus, this was done with a shallow depth of field to give that ‘goes on to infinity’ sort of feel to the image. If the image was fully sharp then it would cause a visual jar at the edges of the image, by softening the lines that visual jarring is reduced.

This photo is a photograph of an every day object which most people would think is ‘ugly’ or unattractive, it’s the composition and the depth of field that makes it stand out and give it real visual appeal. Being able to capture image like this are skills that are useful in commercial photography, as when you are trying to capture something which is ‘real’ but still want to make it visually appealing and thus show it off at it’s best, then you need a professional photographer who knows how to capture the perfect image. All in a day’s work by my book.
